The expression “expect the unexpected” bears a certain relevance this weekend as Drake
surprises fans with two brand new songs. The self professed ‘6 God’
dropped “God’s Plan” and “Diplomatic Immunity” in an EP of sorts under
the title Scary Hours.
Drake’s first release since More Life in March of 2017, the tracks tap into classic Drake tropes: the success of the hip hop heavyweight’s career, opposition from an indeterminate “they” — and not to be neglected — shades of romantic strife.
“She say, ‘Do you love me?’ I tell her, ‘Only partly’/I only love my bed and my momma, I’m sorry,” Drake raps on the more lighthearted of the pair; the fluidly constructed “God’s Plan.”
“Diplomatic Immunity” alternatively sees Drake embrace more of an aggressive delivery of the song’s constituting verses. The track’s background is quasi-orchestral string work that builds the song’s intensity as Drake notes: “In 2017 I lost a J. Lo.”
